What brokers can learn from CatIQ’s Canadian Catastrophe Conference

The conference returns in 2018, running from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2

With natural catastrophes on the rise in Canada, there’s plenty for brokers to learn at CatIQ’s Canadian Catastrophe Conference (C4) in 2018.

“The upcoming C4 conference could be interesting for brokers in particular, with the diverse range of topics that we’re covering,” Laura Twidle, CatIQ’s director of catastrophic loss analysis, told Canadian Insurance Top Broker.

Those topics include the increasing frequency of extreme weather events in Canada, flood management, earthquake preparedness and the growing threat of wildfires.

“We have more people building in areas that have a wildfire–urban interface,” Twidle said. “With these more extreme weather events coming down in the future, we could get more drought conditions, which could lead to more wildfires.”

This year’s conference will also feature an opening-day disaster mitigation workshop, featuring panelists from Public Safety Canada, the Canadian Climate Forum, the Institute for Catastrophic Loss Reduction and Swiss Re.

“Basically, we want to get a better handle on innovative ideas for disaster mitigation,” Twidle said. “How can the government be more proactive and have better mitigation programs for the future?”

The third annual C4 conference takes place at the Hilton Lac-Leamy in Gatineau, Que., from Jan. 31 to Feb. 2, 2018.
