Union sees increase in police officers buying liability coverage

Policies are available for $265 a year

More and more U.S. law enforcement officers are buying professional liability policies to protect themselves from being sued for on-duty actions, Reuters reports.

Between July 2014 and July 2015, the number of the Fraternal Order of Police union members who bought liability coverage through their union increased by 15 percent.

“In an already litigious society, the likelihood of a police officer being sued or charged, often falsely, grows by the day,” says Jim Pasco, executive director of the union. “Officers are increasingly aware of the need to be protected and joining the FOP legal defense plan in growing numbers.”

Policies are available for $265 a year, and cover legal expenses but don’t protect against criminal prosecution.
