Uber ordered to inform Canadians who may have had data compromised

Ride-hailing company says there’s no evidence of fraud tied to 2016 breach

The ride-hailing app Uber has been ordered to inform all Canadians whose personal data may have been compromised in a 2016 breach that they were affected.

In a decision dated February 28th, Alberta’s privacy commissioner ruled there was a risk of significant harm to the affected individuals who had their names, email addresses and mobile numbers stolen.

A company spokesman says that while they disagree with the ruling, they will comply and start emailing affected riders and drivers across the country over the next few days.

Uber says it has seen no evidence of fraud or misuse tied to the incident and continues to monitor the affected accounts.

The privacy commissioner’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
