Trisura and Rogers Insurance make their mark among SMEs

Both companies touted for their corporate culture on annual list of best employers

Toronto-based Trisura Guarantee Insurance Company and Calgary-based Rogers Insurance Ltd. are representing the property and casualty insurance space on the most recent edition of Canada’s top small and medium employers, released Tuesday.

The 11-year-old specialty insurer and the 40-year-old brokerage were acknowledged for the ownership culture they encourage within their companies. Both employers were touted for the existence of a share purchase plan, which is available to anyone who works for them.

And both companies support their employees’ ongoing education efforts through subsidies to help pay for courses connected to professional accreditation.

Trisura was also commended for its approach to employees’ vacation time. Employees receive three weeks of a paid vacation allowance when they join the company and that is bumped up to four weeks after three years on the job.

And Rogers Insurance was lauded for its approach to maternal and parental leave benefits. The company supports new parents, biological and adoptive, with top-up payments of up to 90% of the employee’s salary for up to six weeks.

Canada’s top small and medium employers is an annual editorial project undertaken by Mediacorp Canada Inc. It judges Canadian companies with less than 500 employees based on their physical workplace; work atmosphere and social; health, financial and family benefits; vacation and time off; employee communications; performance management; training and skills development; and community involvement.
