Highlights from the 2013 CSIO AGM; BFL names new VP of Halifax office

1. CSIO AGM acknowledges accomplishments from 2013: The Centre for Study of Insurance Operations (CSIO) held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) and member reception on Tuesday, April 22 at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto. CSIO chairman Steve Whitelaw facilitated the meeting, noting, “our members have clearly benefitted from the diligent efforts made by the CSIO team in 2013 to establish a sustainable foundation and high performance organization.”  Some of these 2013 achievements were highlighted in a video presented at the AGM that featured Catherine Smola, president & CEO of CSIO, and various volunteers and industry stakeholders. The video can be viewed here. Additionally, awards were handed out to those companies who successfully achieved CSIO Certification for eDocs.

2. Aviva Canada partners with MSA Research to preserve access to industry information: Aviva Canada has announced a new title sponsorship of MSA Research’s 2014 Quarterly P&C Outlook Reports in Quebec. The sponsorship will provide the entire membership of the RCCAQ with access to this data. In addition, Aviva’s sponsorship enables the distribution of printed French reports to broker CEOs with RCCAQ memberships. MSA’s quarterly reports provide key insurance industry information including financial results for Canada’s insurers and updated Standard and Poor’s (S&P) financial strength ratings.“We are extremely pleased that Aviva Canada has graciously assumed this important program. A program which will allow RCCAQ member brokerages to continue to benefit from MSA’s Quarterly Outlook Reports,” said Joel Baker, CEO of MSA Research Inc., in a press release. “We’re very pleased that Aviva will be forging ahead with this initiative, which will give RCCAQ members special and regular access to updated industry data. Under this partnership, MSA Research will continue to distribute its quarterly reports exclusively to our members,” said Guy Parent, executive director of the RCCAQ. “Being able to track and analyze current market changes is a key strategic advantage, particularly since brokerage firms need to regain market share.”

3. BFL names new VP of its Halifax office: BFL CANADA has announced a new addition to its Maritimes team. Andrew Timmons will be joining as vice-president for the Halifax office. Timmons used to work as a senior associate and commercial lines insurance broker for a Halifax-based insurance firm. 

4. SMA opens 2014 Awards Program to nominations: Strategy Meets Action (SMA), an insurance strategic advisory firm, has opened the annual SMA Innovation in Action Awards Program for nominations. Winners will be recognized during the SMA Summit at the Mandarin Oriental, Boston on September 15th, 2014. Nominations are due June 30th. The SMA Innovation in Action awards will be presented to organizations that have successfully implemented a key business initiative or project/solution that best leverages innovative, transformational approaches and solutions that demonstrate game-changing results.

5. The Co-operators introduces new chairperson and directors: The Co-operators Group Limited is pleased to introduce John Harvie as its new chairperson of the board of directors. Harvie was elected at the first board meeting following the organization’s Annual General Meeting in Montreal, where it welcomed four new directors to the board. Harvie was the CEO of Co-op Atlantic from 2002 until his retirement in the spring of 2011. He represented Co-op Atlantic as a delegate to The Co-operators prior to joining the board in April 2011. Harvie replaces Richard Lemoing, who has retired from the board after having served as a director since 2000 and as chairperson since 2007. The four Directors selected to serve three-year terms are: Geri Kamenz representing the Ontario Region; Michael Mac Isaac representing the Atlantic Region; Collette Robertson representing the Saskatchewan Region; Jocelyn VanKoughnet representing the Manitoba Region.
