All seven rail cars, including the engine, were destroyed

Six people have died in an Amtrak train derailment between Washington and New York City, the busiest rail corridor in the U.S.

A further 144 people have been sent to hospitals, several in critical condition. Most of the injured sustained fractures.

All seven rail cars, including the engine, were destroyed.

It is still unclear what caused the derailment. National Safety Transportation Board investigators are at the scene.
