SGI clarifies medical marijuana tweet

Drugs, alcohol, or both are factors in more than 1,300 crashes each year

SGI is clarifying a tweet it sent out on Tuesday about the dangers of driving while on drugs.

Tuesday’s tweet read “Just because you have a prescription, doesn’t mean you can drive while using it. High driving is impaired driving.”

The Crown insurer says even though the tweet had a picture of medical marijuana, the theme is impaired driving caused by prescription drugs, but is not targeted at medical marijuana users.

SGI’s role is to help raise awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and provide information and tips to the public, says spokesperson Kelley Brinkworth.

The insurer says drugs, alcohol, or both are factors in more than 1,300 crashes each year.
