RISK: Beware biometrics

Swap your iPhone password for a fingerprint sensor and let your vocal cadences confirm your identity to your bank.

Biometrics may be easy (no more forgetting passwords or wallets!) and secure (nobody else has your fingerprints!), but they’re also incredibly public.

“I do know what your ear looks like, if I meet you, and I can take a high resolution photo of it from afar,” Alvaro Bedoya, a law professor at Georgetown University, told Wired. “I know what your fingerprint looks like if we have a drink and you leave your fingerprints on the pint glass.”

And that inherent publicity makes it easier for a hacker to create replicas and for officials to track your whereabouts.
