Response Prompts Second RSA Canada ‘Making Partner’ Program

There’s been an overwhelming response to the insurance broker educational program offered by RSA Canada — so much so, that the insurer been compelled to schedule another educational “Making Partner” program in January 2009.

RSA, a leading home, car and business insurer, hosts the program to foster expertise by providing customized business and leadership skills to its broker representatives who have a high potential and aptitude to “make partner” one day.

For the two sessions, 16 RSA and CNS brokers from across Canada were selected for the first run, which began with the week-long executive education course at Queen’s University on June 8. Another 17 brokers were selected for the second run of the program, due to begin in the new year.

Candidates for the program are vetted by a committee of industry professionals.

“Selecting participants was extremely difficult due to the large number of applications received from exceptional and deserving individuals,” says Ginny Bannerman, CEO of the Insurance Brokers Association of Alberta and a member of the panel charged with choosing broker candidates for the program. “Kudos to RSA for adding a second term to facilitate more participants,” she enthuses. “What a great program it is – I wish there had been something similar to ‘Making Partner’ when I was a broker!”

The program features leadership assessment, a personalized development plan, a week-long executive education course at Queen’s School of Business, a mentorship and networking program. It also offers an RSA education day and sponsorship to attend an industry conference.

Shawn DeSantis, senior vice President, personal and commercial insurance, applauded the number of applicants. “We were very impressed with the number of high-calibre applicants we received — these are people who are the future leaders of our industry.”

Chris Ball, vice president of Reliance Insurance who participated in the Making Partner Program, attests that the  “RSA Making Partner Program surpassed my expectations in numerous ways, from the dynamic interactions with my colleagues, and the insight and skills I took away from the course [at the Queen’s Executive Development Centre] that can be applied in my brokerage immediately. I’m pleased to see a company that’s truly giving me the tools I need to grow my brokerage.”

The RSA Canada group includes Roins Financial Services Limited, Royal & Sun Alliance Insurance Company of Canada, Quebec Assurance Company, Johnson Inc., Western Assurance Company, Ascentus Insurance Ltd., Canadian Northern Shield Insurance Company and is part of RSA Insurance Group plc, and employs upwards of 3,000 personnel in Canada.

Canadian Insurance editor Barbara Aarsteinsen, also presided as a member of the panel selection committee for this year’s round of RSA broker participants.
