Rattle and roar of late spring storms shatter calm of southern Alberta evening

Approximately 2,000 homes and businesses affected by power outages

Thousands of people were left without electricity Thursday evening when a series of powerful thunderstorms rocked Calgary and much of southern Alberta.

An extremely strong wind uprooted trees and brought down power lines in the city, while large hail pelted other areas when the systems roared through the region.

The utility company Enmax says about 2,000 homes and businesses were affected.

As of Friday morning, all outages had been repaired.

There were also outages in Lethbridge, where a few streets were flooded

The Strathmore, Brooks and Vulcan counties south and east of Calgary were placed under a tornado watch just before 8:30, but there were no reports of twisters.
