Privacy Breaches Continue: B.C. Insurance Council
Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC) licensees continue to misuse client information, despite heightened measures to enforce privacy, according to the province’s insurance council.
Licensees have used the ICBC database to try to sell drivers insurance, and in one case, used it to find the other driver in a road rage incident, the Insurance Council of British Columbia reports in a recent notice, warning that licensees using the database improperly could lose their licences for up to two years. “Council takes any breach of confidentiality very seriously and believes it brings into question the integrity of the insurance industry.”
The notice reminds licensees that the database is for ICBC business, such as insurance, licensing and registration, only. “Any other access or use of information is
strictly prohibited.”
The Council wants agencies to review privacy procedures with their employees, along with the terms and conditions of using the database.
