Nova Scotia remains without power after storm

More than 2,000 customers without electricity early Friday morning.

Power outages continue to affect Cape Breton, NS residents and business a day after a powerful storm swept through the Atlantic region. The storm pulled down power lines throughout the region and caused minor damage.

More than 2,000 Nova Scotia Power customers were without electricity early today. Virtually all of them are in Cape Breton, including the communities of Sydney, Baddeck, Goshen, Ingonish and River Bourgeois.

The majority of claims have been property-related, including roof damage resulting from shingles blowing off, damage to metal roofs resulting from high winds, as well as fallen trees, according to Jodi Dakai, president at Blue Nose Insurance Brokers in Sydney, NS. Dakai confirmed there were some areas without power, such as Glace Bay, but overall the region “appears to be up and running as normal.”

In terms of  advice for customers who have experienced damage, Dakai said they should call their local brokers.

“Take any necessary action to prevent further damages by contacting contractors for immediate repairs, and stay in contact with [your] broker through the claims experience,” she told Canadian Insurance Top Broker December 9.

According to Fred Plant of Plant Hope Adjusters, New Brunswick was “spared the wrath of this storm cell.” There were reports of about 12,000 people without power but by late Friday afternoon everything was restored to normal. Plant added there was some very heavy rain for a short period of time and a few localized areas were flooded.

“Most of the claims were water damage and we had very few minor wind claims,” he told Canadian Insurance Top Broker December 9. “[The storm] came quickly and left quickly.”

In Newfoundland, a 50-year-old man is recovering from minor injuries after he was thrown into an oncoming vehicle by a gust of wind. The man was crossing O’leary Avenue in St. John’s yesterday when he was shoved across the road by a sudden blast of wind around 8pm.

As well, high winds also toppled a tractor-trailer on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Lewisporte Junction in central Newfoundland.
