New Zealand insurers accused of bullying over claims

Kiwi quake victims cry foul

The devastating quake in Christchurch, New Zealand, was four years ago, but residents hit hard have complained to ABC — Australia’s equivalent of the CBC — that insurers have dragged out claims and played dirty over reimbursements.

The report on the broadcaster’s website is more than usual insurer-bashing. It actually tracked down an anonymous source for corroboration of tactics by some companies, which if true, arguably show a textbook example of how not to retain customer trust.

New Zealand Labour’s earthquake recovery spokeswoman Megan Woods is pushing for the government to tighten the rules on insurance companies and give them a deadline to settle claims.
