Intact Insurance adds Alberta to “my Driving Discount” program

Good drivers can receive up to 25% off their insurance premiums

Drivers in Alberta are now eligible for Intact Insurance’s “my Driving Discount” program, which uses data compiled by a mobile app to reward good driving behaviour.

The program was launched in Ontario in 2013 and is also available in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec. Drivers can earn a discount of up to 25% on their insurance premiums based on the driving data recorded by the smartphone app. Commercial drivers are eligible for the program as well. They receive an on-board diagnostic device that connects to their vehicle to record the driving data, rather than downloading a smartphone app.

“This program encourages customers to improve their driving habits by offering them an opportunity to save money based on their good driving behaviour. More and more, safe drivers are looking for customized insurance programs that reward them for good habits on the road and ‘my Driving Discount’ does exactly that,” says Rosa Nelson, vice president of sales and business development for Western Canada at Intact Insurance.

Drivers are assessed on three factors: hard braking, rapid acceleration and time of day. The premium discount is calculated after an assessment period of about nine months, but drivers with personal auto policies receive an immediate discount of 10% off auto insurance premiums by signing up for the program. Commercial drivers will receive a discount of 5%.
