Executive shakeups at Marsh, AIG

Peter Zaffino’s departure from Marsh means a new CEO for the brokerage

Peter Zaffino is leaving his post as CEO of Marsh LLC to take on the role of global chief operating officer for American International Group (AIG) Inc. Marsh, in turn, has promoted its current president, John Doyle, to lead the brokerage as CEO.

Zaffino, who also takes on the title of executive vice president, will focus on AIG’s long-term strategy and operating plan, according to an announcement released by AIG on Thursday. He will lead the day-to-day business of all country operations, which includes U.S. commercial field operations, and be responsible for global business services, administration and communications. AIG, a global P&C, life and general insurance company, has offices in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

Zaffino’s role will take effect Aug. 1. He leaves Marsh six years after he took on the role of CEO and after more than 15 years with its parent company, Marsh & McLennan Companies.

“AIG’s field operations will benefit from Peter’s experience across all aspects of the business, most recently with one of the world’s largest brokers. Adding his deep insurance knowledge and expertise to the leadership team at AIG will accelerate our efforts to build and expand on this great franchise,” says Brian Duperreault, AIG’s president and CEO, in a press release.

In response, Marsh has made its own executive shift with the appointment of John Doyle to the role of CEO in addition to his current title of president.

As president and CEO of Marsh, Doyle will continue to oversee the firm’s global brokerage businesses while assuming responsibility for the brokerage’s global risk and specialties unit, portfolio businesses and operational functions. Doyle will take the helm immediately.

Prior to joining Marsh & McLennan in 2016, Doyle was CEO of AIG’s commercial insurance businesses worldwide, responsible for property, casualty, financial lines, specialty lines, institutional markets, and mortgage products and services.

“John’s accomplishments and impressive track record of building strong client relationships and inspiring colleagues make him ideal to serve as president and CEO of Marsh,” says Dan Glaser, president & CEO of Marsh & McLennan Companies, in a statement. “Today’s appointment delivers on our strategic commitment to having the deepest and most talented executive leadership team in the industry.”

Marsh has offices in several Canadian cities.
