CNA names new head of specialty

Kevin Smith will become president and chief operating officer of CNA Specialty on May 22

CNA has announced that Kevin Smith is taking on the role of president and chief operating officer of the company’s specialty business on May 22. He will replace Mark Herman, who recently resigned.

Based in Chicago, he will be responsible for CNA Specialty, which has positions in professional and management liability, financial institutions, healthcare and other specialized property and casualty insurance. CNA also has a surety, warranty and service contract business.

“Kevin is widely known in the industry as a strategic leader with the capabilities to develop and execute profitable growth imperatives across a broad spectrum of P&C products and services,” says Dino Robusto, the chairman and CEO of CNA, through a press release. “He is highly regarded by agents, brokers and colleagues for his industry expertise, as well as his collaborative, forward-thinking approach to the business.”

His insurance career started in 1990 when Smith was hired as a financial institutions underwriter in San Francisco. Since then, he has held a variety of managerial positions in both commercial and P&C lines of business. Most recently, Smith was the executive vice-president and North American field strategic development officer for Chubb, where he coordinated the company’s distribution relationships and was the field liaison for corporate growth initiatives.

Smith will have global responsibility for CNA’s specialty business but will work in partnership with the leadership teams of CNA Canada and CNA Hardy, according to a spokesperson for CNA.
