Canada’s P&C Underwriting Loss A First Since 2002

Fundraising through the Lew Dunn Memorial Foundation has topped $1.7 million to date in support of colon cancer research following the organization’s annual Golf Classic recently at The Club At Bond Head north of Toronto.

The foundation was created in 1999 by the Dunn family and the Toronto General and Western Hospital Foundation following the passing of Lew Dunn, former president and CEO of Aviva Canada Inc.

The annual golf tournament is a popular draw; this year 260 golfers teed up in support of the cause.

“This is a spectacular event and we are honoured to have been the exclusive platinum sponsor for the past nine years,” says Robin Spencer, president & CEO of Aviva Canada Inc.  “The generosity of all those involved mirrors the spirit of Lew, and we thank everyone who has helped make this a record-breaking year.”

The funds raised support the R. Lewis Dunn Scholarship in Colorectal and Oncologic Surgery, enabling the University Health Network, together with the University of Toronto, to train future professionals dedicated to working in this important field of medicine.

“Graduates from the scholarship program have already made some great strides and contributions to colon cancer surgery,” says Dr. Richard Reznick, vice president of education at the University Health Network. “Since the program was launched in 1999 our graduates, who are trained how to care for patients with colon cancer, have made a difference around the world, raising awareness of the disease, and developing better treatments.”
