Aon Benfield’s new software charts terrorism risk

"We can now apply CFD analysis to any city across the world,"

Impact Forecasting, Aon Benfield’s cat model development team, is using new software that measures potential losses from a terrorist attack.

This blast radius modeling analyzes a variety of possible scenarios, such as a structure deflecting a blast away from the insured building or if damage is limited to floors below the insured location. The modeling system, which uses computational fluid dynamics (CFD) software, quantifies blast epicenter, magnitude and chemical composition, among other factors.

“We can now apply CFD analysis to any city across the world upon client request, quantifying the effect of location and blast size uncertainties to highlight the variation of the possible impacts,” says Mark Lynch, who leads political risk model development at Impact Forecasting.
